I wanted to pass along the following information regarding one of our PFBC water rescue instructors (Rick Russo) who will be receiving recognition by the Governor for his involvement in a water rescue during the Hurricane Irene deployment. The Governor’s office invited Russo as a special guest to the Governor’s Address. They are going to recognize Norristown F.D. Capt. Robert Spitko and Rick Russo for a rescue they both did during Hurricane Irene. The Governor’s main focus with Spitko and Russo is the contribution volunteer fire services swift water teams made during Hurricane Irene. Congratulations to ALL involved in the water rescue operation! As Scott Grahn says “water rescue has no boundaries.” Multiple individuals with the right training from different parts of Pennsylvania worked together and made a difference by their actions during Hurricane Irene.

We now have more IRER instructors to contribute to our mission. This past weekend six instructors successfully completed the IRER instructor course held at Stackhouse. Congratulations go out to Jake, Jim, Kevin, Rafael, Kevin, and Ralph. In all of our courses, we preach how key it is to have backup and this weekend proved the importance. Not only is it important to have backup on scene of an emergency call-out, but even when teaching a class. The location we had eyed on Saturday had ice.But when ITs arrived on Sunday, the ice was no more.So we immediately went to plan “B”.Thankfully Black Moshannon State Park is located in higher elevations which made for a great day of training. A few pictures were posted on the PWRIA site and a bunch more on our Facebook page. Check them out!
20-Jan-2012 Happy New Year to all. As we settle in to 2012, the PWRIA looks to keep moving forward. The officers have been in talks about some great ideas and plans for the upcoming year. In order to take advantage of these ideas, we need your help. And as the first step, we are updating the membership roster. Just a reminder, dues can be paid through the March meeting. Dues can be sent to Robert Stichler. His address can be found on the membership application posted on the PWRIA website. If you have any comments or questions in regards to dues or any other PWRIA business, feel free to contact us and one of the officers will be in touch.

13-NOV-2011 Chris Calhoun, lead Instructor Trainer, has been spending much time doing research and restructuring the ALSR course curriculum. This past weekend, the rest of the ITs got the chance to review the program. We spent numerous hours going through the PowerPoint presentation and instructor manual. We were also able to drill in some of the newly added skills. We were very pleased with the material and offered many proposals.Chris is evaluating all recommendations as we get one step close to a final draft.Instructor Trainers plan to gather in the summer of 2012 to review the entire program before rolling out the new course.Because of the vast changes, Ryan Walt will be looking to plan an instructor update for all current ALSR instructors projected for late summer / early fall of 2012.Ryan also has scheduled an ALSR class for new instructors shortly afterwards.

24-Sept-2011 We had a great turn out on Saturday for the fall meeting. Thank you everybody who set time aside to attend and thank you Ryan for supplying lunch. In addition to internal business; some of the other topics discussed were a PFBC report, Proboard testing, and Team Typing. We had a lot of great feedback during the meeting and because of this input, the PWRIA is moving in the right direction. Give me some time to update the website with the items discussed. Also, it is important for members to pay their dues in order to take advantages of association benefits.
