FACT SHEET

PA FISH AND BOAT COMMISSION

PURPOSE.- The course is designed to train water rescue personnel in the most current techniques of boat rescue and water safety. The basic intentions of the course are:

1. To familiarize the rescuer with the proper procedures used in basic water safety and safe boat handling.

2. To have the rescuer demonstrate a proficiency in water rescue relative to individual capabilities.

3. To give the rescuer a greater sense of competency in dealing with on-the-water emergencies.

STUDENTS.- The program was developed for training fire and rescue department personnel. However, through appropriate adaptation, the course can be used in the water rescue training of police departments, park service personnel, or for members of any boating and water safety organization. You must be at least 18 years old to attend this training.

INSTRUCTION.- Only certified instructors teach the course. Instructor training can be arranged by contacting the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's Bureau of Boating and Education.

CLASS SIZE.- The number of students may vary depending on equipment availability, student experience and the number of instructors. A minimum of two instructors for every sixteen (16) students is required.

LOCATION.- Training is held in the classroom, as well as at a swimming pool or open water area, and at a moving water sited, dependent on program type.

CONTENT.- The course is divided into types of training. Each course covers a particular level of water rescue, progressing from self rescue to more technical rescues. Depending on need/geographic location, Water Rescue & Emergency Response or both Water Rescue & Emergency Response and Emergency Boat Operation & Rescue, may be all that is necessary for a given rescue unit or organization. Additional training consists of Ice Rescue & Emergency Response, Lines System Rescues and Personal Watercraft Emergency Operation & Rescue
